Welcome to Meghalaya
Meghalaya, meaning "Abode of Clouds," is one of the most scenic states in northeastern India. Established on 21 January 1972, it is bordered by Assam to the north and east and Bangladesh to the south and west. The state capital, Shillong, is often called the "Scotland of the East" because of its rolling hills, pleasant climate, and colonial charm.
Known for its lush green landscapes, Meghalaya is famous for its dense forests, crystal-clear rivers, majestic waterfalls, and living root bridges created by the Khasi and Jaintia communities. The state receives some of the highest rainfall in the world, with places like Mawsynram and Cherrapunji (Sohra) attracting visitors for their unique weather and breathtaking scenery. Popular attractions include Umiam Lake, Nohkalikai Falls, Elephant Falls, Dawki River, and the Mawlynnong Village, often recognized for its cleanliness and eco-friendly practices.
